Michel Alliot-Marie: A Life in Politics
Early Life and EducationMichel Marie was born in Neuilly-sur-Seine, France, to René Leyco and Bernard Marie, an international rugby arbitrator and former deputy and mayor of Biarritz. She attended the Sorbonne University in Paris, where she earned degrees in law, economics, and philology. Alliot-Marie also holds a doctorate in political science.
Political Career
Alliot-Marie's political career began in 1981 when she became a national secretary in the Rally for the Republic (RPR) party. She held various leadership positions within the party, including deputy executive secretary for foreign affairs (1990), deputy chairman of the RPR in the National Assembly (1998-2002), and party president (1999-2002). In 2009, she joined the Union for a Popular Movement (UMP), where she served as vice president.
Local Government
Alliot-Marie began her career in local government in 1983 as a city councilor in Ciboure, Atlantic Pyrenees. She later served as a city councilor in Biarritz (1989-1991) and in Saint-Jean-de-Luz (1995-2002), where she was mayor from 1995-2002. From 1994-2001, she was the General Consul of Atlantic Pyrenees.
Parliamentary Career
From 1988 to 2007, Alliot-Marie was a deputy for Atlantic Pyrenees in the National Assembly. She also served as a member of the European Parliament from 1989-1992.
Ministerial Positions
Alliot-Marie has held numerous ministerial positions in the French government. She served as Minister of Youth and Sports from 1993-1995, Minister of Defense from 2002-2007, Minister of the Interior from 2007-2009, Minister of Justice from 2009-2010, and Minister of Foreign and European Affairs from 2010-2011.
Resignation from Foreign Ministry
Alliot-Marie resigned from her post as Minister of Foreign Affairs in 2011 amidst controversy over her handling of the Tunisian crisis. She was accused of enjoying the hospitality of a Tunisian businessman close to former President Ben Ali during the unrest.
