Biography of Michele Marie Bachmann

Michele Marie Bachmann is an American politician and member of the Republican Party. She has been serving in the United States House of Representatives since 2007, representing the 6th district of Minnesota. Bachmann was born as Michele Marie Amble in Waterloo, Iowa to a family of Norwegian Lutheran Democrats. When she was 13 years old, her family moved from Iowa to Minnesota. After her parents' divorce, her father, David John Amble, relocated to California. Michele was raised by her mother, Jean Johnson, who later remarried. In 1974, Bachmann graduated from high school and then worked in an Israeli kibbutz before attending Winona State University. She received a bachelor's degree in 1978. In the same year, she married therapist Marcus Bachmann, and they have five children together, including two sons and three daughters. Unfortunately, Bachmann also experienced a miscarriage during her marriage. The couple has also been actively involved in the lives of 23 orphaned girls, providing them with care and support. From 1992 to 2000, Bachmann and her husband obtained a license to simultaneously foster three orphaned children. Some girls stayed with the Bachmanns for several months, while others stayed for over a year. In 1979, Bachmann became one of the first students at the O. W. Coburn School of Law, which was then part of Oral Roberts University. She was greatly influenced by John Eidsmoe and even contributed to his book, 'Christianity and the Constitution.' In 1986, Bachmann earned a law degree. Despite her parents being Democrats, Bachmann became a devoted Republican during her time at Winona State University. In 1976, she and her husband joined the pro-life movement. Initially, Bachmann supported Jimmy Carter in the 1976 presidential campaign but was later disappointed by his liberal policies on abortion and economic issues. She then stood behind Ronald Reagan in the 1980 campaign. In 2000, Bachmann became a senator for the 56th district of Minnesota, defeating the incumbent senator Gary Laidig in the primary elections. She also surpassed representatives from competing parties, including Ted Thompson from the Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party and Lyno Sullivan from the Minnesota Independence Party. In November 2006, Bachmann was elected to the United States House of Representatives, becoming the first Republican woman to represent Minnesota in Congress. In early 2011, rumors began circulating in American political circles that Bachmann planned to run for president in the 2012 election. On June 13, 2011, during the Republican presidential debates in New Hampshire, Bachmann confirmed that she had submitted all necessary documents to the Federal Election Commission and would indeed represent the Republican Party in the upcoming elections. She formally announced her candidacy on June 27, 2011, during a visit to Waterloo, Iowa. On August 13, 2011, Bachmann won the Iowa Republican straw poll, becoming the first woman to achieve this victory. However, it remains to be seen how successful Bachmann will be as a candidate. She has been criticized for her loose relationship with facts and often making inappropriate remarks in her speeches. In fact, on June 26, 2011, Bob Schieffer noted that according to PolitiFact.com, only one out of 23 of Bachmann's statements could be considered completely truthful, and another seven were dangerously close to being outright lies. However, with plenty of time remaining until the presidential elections, the political landscape in the United States could change drastically.
