Biography of Michael Kleiner
Michael Kleiner was an Israeli political and social activist who spent his entire conscious life in Tel Aviv. He was born on April 4, 1948, in Munich. His parents, who were Polish immigrants, got married in the ghetto in 1941. They were later sent to Auschwitz, where they were separated, and it was only after the war that they were able to find each other again. When Michael was two years old, his family repatriated to Israel and settled in Tel Aviv.
Early Political Career
Michael Kleiner began his political career while studying at the law faculty of Tel Aviv University. In the early 1970s, he formed a group of young activists called "Herut," which was the first in history to remove left-wing leaders from the student council. At the age of 25, Kleiner was elected to the municipal council of Tel Aviv-Jaffa. As the chairman of the youth department of Herut, he was supposed to become a member of the Knesset in 1977, but the coveted seat went to Menachem Begin's relative, Roni Milo, who defeated Kleiner in the internal elections. Another conflict with Begin arose during the discussion of the Camp David Accords, as Kleiner opposed the transfer of Sinai. Despite his dissenting views, he entered the Knesset in 1981 and became a member, and later the chairman (from 1988-1992), of the Aliyah and Absorption Committee.
Later Career
In 1996, Kleiner returned to the Knesset as part of the Gesher faction, and from 1999 he served as the chairman of the Herut party, founded by Menachem Begin's son, Benny Begin. After unsuccessful attempts in the 2003 and 2006 elections, he followed Benny Begin back to Likud, but unlike him, he did not become a member of the Knesset. Despite his political setbacks, Michael Kleiner remained an influential figure in Israeli politics and continued to advocate for his beliefs.
