Biography of Mitat Teymur oglu Abbasov
Early Life and Education
Mitat Teymur oglu Abbasov was born on July 31, 1926, in Baku, Azerbaijan. He completed his secondary education in 1943 and enrolled in the Azerbaijan Industrial Institute. At the same time, Mitat worked at the "Karadagneft" Trust of the "Azneft" Union. In 1949, after graduating from the institute, he entered the graduate school of the Azerbaijan Industrial Institute named after M. Azizbekov.
Career in Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences
From May 1951 to August 1958, Mitat worked in the oil expedition of the Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences (ANAS) in various positions, including junior research associate and deputy head of scientific work. In 1953, he defended his dissertation and obtained the degree of Candidate of Sciences. In August 1958, he joined the Azerbaijan Institute of Oil Production (AzNII) and later became the head of the laboratory within the ANAS system. In 1962, he earned the degree of Doctor of Technical Sciences. From 1964, he served as the deputy director for scientific work. In 1965, he was appointed as a professor. In 1968, he became a corresponding member of ANAS and in 1980, a full member of ANAS. In 1984, he was elected as a corresponding member of the Russian Academy of Sciences (RAS).
Directorship and Academic Achievements
From 1971 to 2003, Mitat Abbasov served as the director of the Institute of Deep Oil and Gas Fields Problems (IDOGFP). From September 1976 to 1990, he worked as an academic secretary of the Earth Sciences Department. In 1990, he became the vice president of ANAS. In 1991, he was a member of the Presidential Council of the Republic of Azerbaijan. From December 1991 to April 1992, he held the position of State Secretary of the Republic of Azerbaijan.
Political and Additional Roles
Mitat Abbasov was elected as a deputy of the Baku Council for two terms and as a People's Deputy of the USSR in the last convocation from the Shamkhor National-Territorial Electoral District No.222 of the Azerbaijan SSR. In his later years, he worked as the chief scientific researcher at the Institute of Geology of ANAS and served as the scientific supervisor of oil and gas field development problems.
Scientific Contributions and Honors
Mitat Abbasov's main scientific activities focused on the development of oil and gas fields and underground hydrodynamic processes. Under his leadership, new technologies were developed to enhance oil recovery and increase well productivity, and economic-mathematical models for optimizing the development of oil and gas resources were created. He authored 560 published scientific works, including 16 monographs, 43 inventions, and 5 patents.
Mitat Abbasov received numerous awards and honors during his career, including the State Prize of Azerbaijan, the Academician I.M. Gubkin Prize, the Order of the Red Banner of Labor, the Medal "For Valiant Labor in Commemoration of the 100th Anniversary of V.I. Lenin," the Honorary Diploma of the Supreme Council of the Azerbaijan SSR, the Silver Medal of the Exhibition of Achievements of the National Economy of the USSR (twice), the "Distinguished Scientist of Azerbaijan," the "Honored Oil Worker of the USSR," the "Honored Worker of the Gas Industry of the USSR," and the "Inventor of the USSR."
