Miguel Enríquez: Leader of the Chilean Revolutionary Left Movement
Early Life and EducationMiguel Edgardo Enríquez Frodden was born into a politically active family. His father, Edgardo Enríquez Frödden, was a member of the Radical Party and served as rector of the University of Concepción.
Political Involvement
In 1967, Enríquez became the general secretary of the Chilean Marxist-Leninist party, the Movimiento de Izquierda Revolucionaria (MIR). He emerged as a prominent leader of Chile's political left, advocating for revolutionary change.
Marriage and Family
In 1968, Enríquez married Alejandra Pizarro in a joint ceremony with his sister, Inés Enríquez, and Bautista van Schauwen, another MIR leader. His son, Marco Enríquez-Ominami, became a well-known Chilean politician.
Opposition to the Military Junta
Following the military coup of September 11, 1973, which overthrew the government of Salvador Allende, Enríquez refused to seek political asylum in foreign embassies. He became one of the key leaders of the resistance against the military junta led by Augusto Pinochet.
Death and Legacy
On October 5, 1974, a unit of the political police DINA raided a safe house in the San Miguel commune where Enríquez and his comrades were hiding out. A fierce firefight ensued, lasting over two hours. Enríquez was killed along with several of his companions.
In 2019, a court found the DINA agents involved in Enríquez's death guilty of intentional murder. A clinical hospital in Cuba was named in his honor. His legacy continues to inspire left-wing activists in Chile today.
