Early Life and Military Career

Mikhail Aleksandrovich Ebeling was born in 1831. In 1852, he graduated from the School of Guards Sub-Ensigns and joined the Leib-Guard Pavlovsky Regiment, where he served for 22 years.

Crimean War and Polish Campaign

During the Crimean War (1854), Ebeling guarded the coast of the St. Petersburg province from potential Anglo-French landings. In the Polish Campaign of 1863, he commanded the His Majesty's Company in the Pavlovsky Regiment.

Promotion and Honours

In 1869, Ebeling was promoted to Colonel and appointed Battalion Commander in the Leib-Guard Grenadier Regiment. In 1871, he was awarded the title of Aide-de-Camp. After a regimental inspection in the presence of the Austrian Emperor, he received the Commander's Cross of Franz Joseph II in 1874. Subsequently, he was appointed Commander of the Leib-Guard 1st Rifle Battalion.

Russo-Turkish War and Death

Ebeling's service as battalion commander was short-lived. With the outbreak of the Russo-Turkish War in 1877, he joined the conflict and was tragically killed on October 12, 1877, at Gornji Dubnjak. An eyewitness described his death:

"Colonel Ebeling... was one of the first to fall. He rushed forward almost to the redoubt itself and a bullet struck him in the leg above the knee, shattering the bone. A quick amputation could have saved him, but Ebeling fell very close to the redoubt, so that there was no possibility of recovering him. He lay on the hilltop unattended until 10 a.m., and gangrene developed with remarkable speed. He died shortly after he reached the dressing station."
