Colonel in the German Military Intelligence (Abwehr)
Col. was a German military intelligence officer who served in the Abwehr, the German military intelligence organization. He was a member of the German resistance movement against Adolf Hitler.
Head of Abwehr Group III U (Radio Counter-Intelligence)
Until 1943, Col. was the head of Abwehr Group III U, which was responsible for radio counter-intelligence. He played a key role in gathering and analyzing intelligence on enemy communications.
Head of "AST Vienna"
From January to July 1944, Col. was the head of "AST Vienna," a branch of the Abwehr in Vienna. In this role, he worked closely with Admiral Wilhelm Canaris, the head of the Abwehr, as well as Hans Oster and Georg Hansen.
Contact with the July 20 Plotters
Col. had regular contact with General Friedrich Olbricht and other members of the July 20 Plot, a conspiracy to assassinate Hitler and overthrow the Nazi regime. He provided intelligence and logistical support to the plotters.
Arrest and Imprisonment
After the failure of the July 20 Plot on July 23, 1944, Col. was arrested by the Gestapo and imprisoned in solitary confinement in Berlin until April 25, 1945. He was then arrested by the NKVD and taken to the Soviet Union, where he remained until his return to Germany in 1955.
