Constitutionalist Revolution
In 1965, Caamaño played a pivotal role in the Dominican Civil War, also known as the Constitutionalist Revolution. He led the rebel forces opposing the American occupation and the military regime that had overthrown President Juan Bosch with the support of the CIA.
Presidency and Coup
On May 4, 1965, Caamaño became the Constitutionalist President of the Dominican Republic. However, disagreements within the military forced him to leave office on August 30, 1965. He subsequently initiated a guerrilla war against the dictatorial regime of Joaquin Balaguer.
Assassination
On February 16, 1973, Caamaño was wounded, captured, and executed by government forces. His assassination sparked widespread outrage and became a symbol of resistance against oppression in the Dominican Republic.
