Biography of Ali Tounsi

Colonel Ali Tounsi was the Director of the Algerian National Security Service from 1995 to 2010. Before his appointment to this position, he served in the army intelligence, where he rose to the rank of Deputy Chief. He was a veteran of the Algerian War of Independence.

In 1995, President Zeroual Lamine, the head of the military regime in Algeria, appointed him as the Director of the National Security Service (DGSN) - the national counterintelligence agency. In this role, he primarily focused on combating Islamic terrorism.

In 2007, an unsuccessful assassination attempt was carried out against him by Islamists. On February 25, 2010, Colonel Ali Tounsi was shot dead during a meeting in the headquarters of the Algerian intelligence agency. According to the police, his deputy, 66-year-old Colonel Shuaib Oltash, was the assailant, who also sustained serious injuries during the arrest (according to another version, he attempted to shoot himself).

It is reported that the murder of the chief of counterintelligence was not related to the activities of Islamists, but rather was linked to a professional conflict.
