Early Life and Education
Mykhailo Chechetov, a prominent Ukrainian politician and statesman, was born on October 3, 1953, in Lyubimovka, Russia. He graduated from the Kharkiv Engineering and Economics Institute in 1979 with a degree in Economics and Organization of Mining Industry.
Career in Industry and Academia
From 1971, Chechetov worked in various roles in the mining industry in Yenakiieve, Ukraine. After graduating, he became a Lecturer at the Kharkiv Engineering and Economics Institute in 1982. He rose through the ranks to become Dean of the Faculty of Economics in 1994.
Entry into Politics and Government
In 1994, Chechetov was elected as a Member of Parliament (MP) of Ukraine for the "Social Market Choice" faction. From 1994 to 1998, he served as Deputy Head of the Verkhovna Rada Committee on Economic Policy and Public Administration. He also held positions as Deputy Minister of Economy of Ukraine (1998-1999) and First Deputy Chairman of the State Property Fund of Ukraine (1999-2003). In 2003, he became the Head of the Fund until 2005.
Return to Politics and Controversies
Following the Orange Revolution, Chechetov returned to academia as a Professor at the Kharkiv National Economic University in 2005. In 2006, he re-entered politics as an MP for the Party of Regions. He rose to become Advisor to the President of Ukraine in March 2010, a position he held until his death.
During his time as Head of the State Property Fund, Chechetov faced allegations of privatizing state assets under pressure from oligarchs. However, he maintained that he intentionally undervalued properties to allow for their potential recovery by the state once oligarchic influence diminished.
Academic and Political Views
Chechetov was a prolific academic and author, publishing over 500 papers and books. He held a Doctor of Science degree in Public Administration and was a Corresponding Member of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine. Politically, he was an ardent supporter of close ties between Ukraine and Russia.
Recognition and Family
Chechetov received numerous awards, including the Order of Merit, 3rd Class (2003). He was married to Natalia Chechetova, an employee of the Secretariat of the Verkhovna Rada. Their daughter, Tatiana Chechetova-Terashvili, became a Professor at the Kharkiv National Economic University.
