Early Life and Education

Georgiy Evgenievich Trifonov was born to a military commander, Evgeny Trifonov. According to his son, Evgeny died of a heart attack in 1937 while awaiting arrest. Other sources claim that Georgiy was born in Finland. He reportedly studied art under renowned artists such as K. Yuon, D. Moor, and G. Ryazhsky.

Imprisonment and Criminal Activity

In 1942, Trifonov was sentenced to two years in a juvenile detention camp. After serving his time, he fought on the front lines. Upon demobilization, he enrolled in an art institute. However, his criminal past was uncovered, forcing him to flee into the criminal underworld. Before his arrest in 1947, he traveled by rail as a thief and committed a murder. He was sentenced to six years in prison, where he continued to live as a "blatnoy" (criminal).

Exile and Writing Career

From 1953 to 1956, Trifonov was exiled to Siberia. In 1956, he began writing poetry and joined the Union of Soviet Writers in 1959. He relocated to Moscow and attended the Higher Literary Courses from 1962 to 1964. In the Soviet Union, four collections of his poems and one of prose were published.

Emigration and Literary Success

In 1968, Trifonov used a trip to Paris to visit relatives as an opportunity to emigrate. He became renowned for his autobiographical trilogy, in which he vividly and compellingly recounted his experiences in prison, on the run, and in exile. His characters display a shocking lack of conscience and ethical principles, particularly towards political prisoners.

Death and Legacy

Georgiy Trifonov died of a heart attack. His literary works continue to captivate readers with their raw and honest portrayal of the criminal underworld and the human condition during the Stalinist era.
