Mikhail Markelovich Guzhavin
Mikhail Markelovich Guzhavin was a prominent Russian and Soviet painter and graphic artist.
Early Life and Education
Guzhavin was born into a peasant family in the village of Shurma, Vyatka Governorate. He later embraced the priesthood and served as a priest in the local church. Guzhavin's early artistic training began in an iconography workshop. He went on to study at the St. Petersburg School for the Encouragement of the Arts and the Higher Art School of Painting, Sculpture, and Architecture at the Imperial Academy of Arts (1911-1917), where he studied landscape painting under N. N. Dubovsky.
Artistic Recognition
In 1917, Guzhavin received the title of artist for his landscape painting "Quiet Night." He was also granted a study abroad scholarship, which he declined. Guzhavin was recognized with awards from the Endogurov brothers and the A. I. Kuindzhi prizes.
Artistic Style and Influences
Settling in St. Petersburg, Guzhavin emerged as a landscape painter known for his lyrical and evocative works. He drew inspiration from the renowned Russian landscape artist I. I. Levitan. During the 1920s, Guzhavin spent time in Poltava, where he established an art studio and taught aspiring artists.
Exhibitions and Legacy
Guzhavin showcased his paintings at various exhibitions, including the Imperial Academy of Arts, the Itinerants' exhibitions, and the Society of Artists named after A. I. Kuindzhi. His notable works include "On the Back Streets" (1911), "Spring in St. Petersburg" (1914), "After the Flood" (1915), "Spring" (1917), "Twilight" (1918), and "Vasilki in Blooming Flax" (1929).
Guzhavin's paintings are held in the collections of the Russian Museum and various regional museums in Russia and Ukraine. His works have also found their way into private collections.
