Early Life and Education
Mikael Persbrandt was born on September 25, 1963, in Jakobsberg, Sweden. His parents divorced when he was 10, and he grew up with his mother, an artist. As a child, Persbrandt enjoyed playing soccer and boxing. He also developed a passion for acting while working as an extra in a production of Shakespeare's "King Lear." After graduating high school, he studied ballet at the Royal Swedish Ballet School. In addition to his ballet training, Persbrandt also exhibited his artistic talents by painting. Theater Career
Persbrandt's theater career began at the Royal Dramatic Theatre in Stockholm. In 2007, he left the Royal Theatre, citing his busy film schedule, causing controversy among other cast members. Persbrandt's debut film role came in 1990. In 1997, he gained international recognition for his portrayal of Gunvald Larsson in the detective series "Beck." He left the series in 2016 after playing the role for many seasons. By that time, Persbrandt had become a highly sought-after actor in Sweden, starring in films such as "Day and Night," "Sun Storm," and "The Caveman." He also appeared in European productions, including the German thriller "One Way" and the Western "Salvation," alongside Mads Mikkelsen and Eva Green.
In the "The Hobbit" trilogy, Persbrandt played Beorn, a shape-shifter who can transform into a bear. His portrayal was met with mixed reviews, with some critics praising his performance and others criticizing his appearance and the special effects. In 2017, he appeared in Guy Ritchie's adventure film "King Arthur: Legend of the Sword" as Greybeard.
Personal Life
Persbrandt was in a relationship with actress Maria Bonnevie in the late 1990s. Since 2005, he has been married to journalist Sanna Lundell, with whom he has three sons. They also have a daughter, Olga, from Lundell's previous relationship. Persbrandt is actively involved in charity work. He has collaborated with UNICEF for over a decade and has worked to raise awareness about children's rights.
