Early Life and Education
Michael Coles was born on August 26, 1976, in Columbia, South Carolina, the youngest of four children. He spent his childhood in St. Matthews, where he excelled in school and demonstrated exceptional ambition. After attending Benedict College for a year, Coles transferred to the University of South Carolina, where he majored in theatre. He later earned an MFA in acting from the Mason Gross School of the Arts at Rutgers University.
Film and Television Career
Coles' acting debut came in a 2002 episode of "ER." Two years later, he appeared in the sports drama "Million Dollar Baby." Subsequently, Coles primarily starred in television series, including "Law & Order," "The Good Wife," and "Criminal Minds."
In terms of feature films, notable appearances include the action thriller "Salt" and the Oscar-nominated "Zero Dark Thirty." Coles also played a significant role in 2012's "Men in Black 3," portraying Will Smith's character as a young man. He later appeared in three episodes of "American Horror Story."
The Rise of Luke Cage
Coles achieved widespread fame for his portrayal of the Marvel superhero Luke Cage. To embody the character, he underwent rigorous training, gaining 30 pounds of muscle. Coles first appeared as Cage in the 2015 Netflix series "Jessica Jones." He later starred in his own individual series, "Luke Cage," which aired for two seasons before being canceled due to creative differences. Coles reprised the role in the 2017 crossover miniseries "The Defenders."
Personal Life
Coles met his future wife, Iva, while they were both students at Rutgers University. They married in 2016 after a decade of dating; at the time, they had a daughter, Naella. In 2018, the couple welcomed a second daughter. Coles and his family currently reside in Los Angeles.
Recent Projects
In 2019, Coles starred in the supernatural series "Evil" alongside Katya Herbers. The show follows a forensic psychologist and a Catholic priest who investigate supernatural cases. Coles plays David Acosta, a former journalist who is training to become a priest. The series has aired three seasons to date.
