Mike Pence

Early Life and Education

Michael Richard "Mike" Pence was born on June 7, 1959, in Columbus, Indiana. Raised in a Catholic household, he served as an altar boy and attended parochial school. Pence graduated from Hanover College and earned a law degree from Robert H. McKinney School of Law before entering private practice.

Political Career

After losing congressional bids in 1988 and 1990, Pence hosted a conservative radio and television talk show from 1994 to 1999. He was elected to the United States Congress in 2000 and served as Chairman of the House Republican Conference from 2009 to 2011.

Mike Pence

Pence identifies as a principled conservative and an adherent to the Tea Party movement. He describes himself as "a Christian, a conservative, and a Republican, in that order" and as "a born-again, evangelical Catholic."

Governorship of Indiana (2013-2016)

Elected the 50th Governor of Indiana in 2012, Pence enacted the largest tax cut in Indiana's history, increased funding for education initiatives, and maintained a state budget surplus.

However, his governorship was also marked by controversies. After signing the Religious Freedom Restoration Act, Pence faced strong opposition from moderate members of his party, the business community, and LGBT advocates. He defended the law against accusations of discrimination.

Pence later signed a revision to the law that included protections for the LGBT community. In 2013, he signed an abortion bill that banned the procedure if the reason was "based on the race, sex, or disability of the fetus." The law was eventually blocked by federal court.

Pence unsuccessfully attempted to prevent the resettlement of Syrian refugees in Indiana. He has also expressed support for intelligent design and opposed reducing penalties for minor marijuana offenses and nonviolent drug crimes.

Vice Presidency (2017-Present)

Following Donald Trump's victory in the 2016 presidential election, Michael Pence was elected as the 48th Vice President of the United States. He assumed office on January 20, 2017.

Personal Life

Pence has been married to Karen Pence since 1985. They have three children: Michael, Charlotte, and Audrey. Their son Michael serves as a Second Lieutenant in the United States Marine Corps.
