Biography of Mike Peters

Mike Peters, born Michael Leslie Peters, was born on February 25, 1959, in Prestatyn, Wales. He grew up in The Crescent Hotel on Edward Henry Street in Rhyl. Eddie MacDonald, who would later become a member of The Alarm, was his childhood friend. Peters later wrote a song named after the street they grew up on.

Early Music Career

Peters made his debut on the music scene on October 6, 1975, leading a band called Hairy Hippie. He then joined The Toilets and later Seventeen, where MacDonald, Dave Sharp, and Nigel Twist also played. The group released a single titled "Don't Let Go" in 1979. In 1981, Seventeen moved to London and signed a contract with I.R.S. Records. The group eventually disbanded but reformed under the name Alarm Alarm, inspired by one of Peters' songs for The Toilets.

The Alarm

With a string of successful singles and seven studio albums, including Declaration, which reached #6 on the UK Albums Chart in 1984, The Alarm gained significant recognition. However, the band disbanded in 1991.

Solo Career

Following the breakup of The Alarm, Peters embarked on a solo career. He released singles like "Back into the System" (in English and Welsh) and "It Just Don't Get Any Better Than This," recorded with the band The Poets. His first solo album, Breathe, was released in 1995 in the UK. This was followed by Second Generation, a collection of rare tracks re-recorded by Peters specifically for the fan club.

Battle with Cancer and Continued Music

In 1996, Peters was diagnosed with cancer, but he found the strength to release his second full-length album, Feel Free. It was later discovered that the initial diagnosis was incorrect. His third album, Rise, showcased a change in direction with elements of electronic music and rootsy acoustic rock. The song "In Circles" from the album was co-written by Peters and Billy Duffy, the guitarist of The Cult.

Later Projects

In 1998, Peters embarked on an acoustic US tour called "The Interactive Acoustic Works U.S. Tour," followed by the release of the live album Live [From a Broadcast]. In 1999, Peters, Billy Duffy, Scott Garrett (The Cult), and Graig Adams (The Mission) formed a new band called Coloursound. The band disbanded after recording a self-titled studio album. Throughout this period, starting in 1993, Peters organized an annual event called "The Gathering," which featured various musicians, including members of The Alarm.

Legacy

Known as the "godfather of the Welsh rock scene," Mike Peters is ranked 11th on the list of "100 Welsh Heroes." His music career, both as the lead vocalist of The Alarm and as a solo artist, has left a lasting impact on the rock music industry.
