Early Life and Family
Dr. Mikhail Aghajanov, an Armenian physician and biochemist, was born on July 3, 1939, in Tbilisi, Georgian SSR, USSR. His paternal grandfather, a renowned physician in the Caucasus region, was the personal physician to the Russian oil magnate Alexander Mantashov. His grandmother, Elena Alihanova, was Mantashov's niece. They had three sons: Georgy, Sergey, and Mikhail's father, Iosif. Iosif, a mining engineer, tragically died in a car accident when Mikhail was just three years old. Mikhail's mother, Asya Khachikyan, was an engineer-technologist.
Education and Academic Career
In 1957, Mikhail graduated high school with honors. He moved to Yerevan and enrolled in the Yerevan State Medical Institute, where he graduated with distinction in 1963. From 1963 to 1966, he pursued postgraduate studies at the Institute's Department of Biochemistry. In 1967, he joined the faculty of the same department. He rose through the ranks, becoming Associate Professor in 1974–1984 and Professor in 1984–1986. From 1988–1991, he served as Pro-Rector for Science at the Yerevan Medical Institute.
Research and Achievements
Dr. Aghajanov's research focused on Alzheimer's disease and the development of therapies for its treatment and prevention. His work also extended to various pathologies, including the role of oxidative hypersensitivity in diseases and its antioxidant regulation. His contributions earned him recognition as a Doctor of Biological Sciences (1979), Professor (1984), and Honored Scientist of Armenia (2010).
