Over his lifetime, Barulin composed approximately 250 chess problems, predominantly two-movers. He established himself as an innovative composer, introducing novel themes that advanced the field of two-move compositions.

White Combinations (1927):Introduced the concept of white pieces actively contributing to the solution of the problem.
Defense of the Group (Line):Named after Barulin, this theme involves the protection of a group of pieces through a specific arrangement on the chessboard.
Combinations on the Mating Move (1930):Explored the use of combining tactics on the move where the checkmate occurs.
Journalistic Career and Role in Chess Organizations
