Paraguayan Chess Grandmaster

Zenón Franco Ocampos(October 1, 1956 - October 1, 2024) was a Paraguayan and later Spanish chess grandmaster, author, and coach.

Early Life and Career

Born in Paraguay, Franco earned the title of Paraguayan champion in 1976. He represented his country at numerous chess Olympiads, playing seven times on the first board. In 1998, he became a Spanish citizen and played for Spain in the 1998 Olympiad.

International Success

Franco achieved notable success in international tournaments. He won the Argentine Grand Prix three times (1979-1981) and the Continental Championship of America in 1981. At the 1982 Chess Olympiad in Lucerne, he won a gold medal for his performance on the first board.

Spanish League and Coaching

In Spain, Franco won two team championships: with Villa de Terror in 1994 and with Marcote in 2003. He also became a renowned chess author, with several of his books translated into Russian. In 2012, he was awarded the title of Senior FIDE Trainer.

Legacy

Franco's contributions to the world of chess are undeniable. His victories, coaching achievements, and literary work have left a lasting impact on the game.
