Early Career

Mikhail Elgin began his professional tennis career in 1998. In June 2001, he reached his first ITF Futures tournament final and claimed his maiden title in July of the same year. He made his ATP World Tour debut in October at the St. Petersburg Open but fell to Fabrice Santoro in the first round.

Struggles and Setbacks

Elgin continued to struggle in subsequent St. Petersburg Open appearances, losing in the first round in 2002 and 2004. Despite winning a Futures tournament in November 2002, he primarily relied on wildcards to participate in ATP events due to his low ranking.

Challenger Circuit Success

A breakthrough came in 2007 when Elgin won three Futures tournaments. He then captured his first ATP Challenger title in Delhi in December 2007. In 2008, he qualified for the ATP tournament in Marseille but lost in the first round. He went on to win Challenger events in Saransk and Samarkand.

ATP Breakthrough

In October 2008, Elgin made history by reaching the quarterfinals of the St. Petersburg Open. He followed up with a second-round appearance the following year.

Doubles Final

In 2011, Elgin and Alexander Kudryavtsev partnered at the St. Petersburg Open and reached the doubles final, only to be defeated by Colin Fleming and Ross Hutchins.
