Early Life and Education
Dimitris Karidis was born to a Greek father and German mother in Dresden, Germany. He grew up in Dresden, but in 1938 his family relocated to Greece. Greek biographers claim that Karidis was the sole survivor from his entire Dresden school class after World War II. In Athens, he studied at the conservatory under Theodoros Babaiannis. After the war, he furthered his education at the Vienna Music Academy under Hans Swarowsky.
Career in Europe
Karidis's conducting career spanned several prestigious European opera houses, including the Cologne and Graz operas. From 1960 to 1967, he led the Philharmonia Hungarica orchestra. Concurrently, he worked at the Vienna State Opera from 1962 to 1969. He also conducted the Oslo Philharmonic Orchestra (1969-1975), Duisburg Symphony Orchestra (1975-1981), and Vienna Tonkunstler Orchestra (1979-1985).
Later Career and Legacy
During the final two years of his life, Karidis served as principal conductor of the Greek Radio Symphony Orchestra. His legacy as a conductor is marked by his exceptional interpretations and collaborations with renowned orchestras and opera companies across Europe.
