Biography of Zdenek Halabala

Zdenek Halabala was a Czech conductor known for his active performances with the orchestras in Prague, Ostrava, and Moscow. He was renowned among the Czechs as the "friend of Russian music," as Russian music held an equally important place in his repertoire as Slovak and Czech music.

Early Years and Education

Zdenek Halabala began his career in the theater in 1924, making his debut as a conductor in the small Czech town of Uherske Hradiste. He received his formal education at the conservatory in Brno, where he studied under the guidance of the renowned composer Leos Janacek.

During this time, Halabala honed his professional skills by conducting various concerts and theater productions. He also organized concerts himself through the Slovak Philharmonic. In 1925, he joined the National Theater in Brno and eventually became its principal conductor.

Signature Style and Favorite Composers

By this time, Halabala had developed his distinct conducting style and established his favorite composers. He preferred the works of Antonin Dvorak, Zdenek Fibich, Leos Janacek, as well as contemporary composers such as Bohuslav Martinu, Vitězslav Novak, Josef Bohuslav Foerster, and Ervín Schulhoff. He also had a particular interest in classical Russian works, including "Boris Godunov," "Kitezh," "Prince Igor," "Snow Maiden," and "Khovanshchina."

Interestingly, one of Halabala's teachers was the renowned Russian singer Fyodor Chaliapin. Halabala met Chaliapin in 1931 when the singer was on tour in Brno.

Career Peak and International Performances

Halabala's career reached its peak in the post-war years when he held positions as the chief conductor in several major Czech theaters. Eventually, he settled at the National Theater in Prague. Despite his busy schedule, Halabala continued to perform internationally, including in East Germany, Italy, Poland, and Yugoslavia.

It was not until 1955 that Halabala first visited the Soviet Union as part of a touring group from the National Theater. Performances conducted by Halabala's orchestra consistently enjoyed tremendous success.

Legacy

Zdenek Halabala passed away on March 4, 1962, at the age of 62. His contributions to the world of music and his dedication to promoting both Czech and Russian compositions have left a lasting impact on the field of conducting.
