Mima Ito: A Distinguished Table Tennis Prodigy
Early Accomplishments and RecordsMima Ito, a Japanese table tennis prodigy, made history at a young age. At 10, she became the youngest player to win a match at the Japanese National Championships and the youngest to triumph in an ITTF Junior Circuit tournament. Remarkably, she defeated a world-ranked 50 opponent at age 11.
International Breakthrough
In 2014, Ito partnered with Miu Hirano to capture the German Open doubles title, making them the youngest winners of an ITTF World Tour event. They went on to win the ITTF World Tour Grand Finals in doubles that year. The following year, Ito clinched the German Open singles title, defeating top-ranked Feng Tianwei.
Olympic Medal and Guinness Records
Ito's Olympic debut in 2016 culminated in a bronze medal in the team event. For this achievement, she entered the Guinness Book of World Records as the youngest Olympic medalist ever. Ito holds three additional Guinness records: youngest World Tour doubles winner, youngest World Tour singles winner, and fastest rally in table tennis (180 strokes in one minute).
Japanese Dominance and World Tour Success
In 2018, Ito swept all three Japanese National Championships categories (singles, doubles, mixed doubles). She became the fourth Japanese player to achieve this feat and the youngest ever, at 17 years old. Ito has also triumphed in seven ITTF World Tour singles events: German Open 2015, Austria Open 2016, Czech Open 2017, Japan Open 2018, Swedish Open 2018, Austria Open 2019, and Hungarian Open 2020.
Olympic Gold and Mixed Doubles Triumph
Ito's Olympic journey reached a pinnacle in 2020 when she partnered with Jun Mizutani to win the first-ever Olympic gold medal in table tennis for Japan. This historic victory solidified her place as one of the greatest players in the sport's history.
