History was made in 1971 when Bengtsson faced off against defending champion Shigeo Itoh of Japan in the World Championship Men's Singles final. With an impressive victory, he ascended to the summit of world table tennis, becoming the first European to break the 17-year Asian stranglehold on the title since 1953. This momentous win resonated even more profoundly, marking the return of Chinese players to the championship for the first time since 1965.

Continued Dominance and Legacy

Bengtsson's triumphs continued unabated in the years that followed. He secured the European Singles Championship in 1972, while also leading Team Sweden to victory in the same tournament. At the 1973 World Championships, he was instrumental in Sweden's victory in the Team competition, and also claimed gold in the Doubles alongside teammate Kjell Johansson.
