Early Life and Education

Mir-Mamed Javad-Zadeh was born on May 18, 1927, in the city of Lenkoran, Azerbaijan, to a family of civil servant. His father, Javadkhan Asker oglu (1868-1939), was from Talish, and his mother, Fatma Khanum Shiralibey kizi (1886-1956), was also from Talish. He is married to Ineza Abdulgasan kizi, and they have two sons, Samir Mir-Mamed oglu (born in 1967) and Mir-Riyad Mir-Mamed oglu (born in 1969).

Javad-Zadeh completed his secondary school education in Lenkoran in 1943 and then enrolled in Azerbaijan State Medical Institute in Baku. After graduating from medical school in 1948, he was appointed as the chief physician and head of the surgical department at Astara District Hospital. It was during this time that he wrote his first scientific article on a unique operation he performed for a giant hernia of the anterior abdominal wall.

Medical Career

Javad-Zadeh's interest in scientific research led him to join the Clinic of Hospital Surgery at Azerbaijan Medical Institute for training in 1950. In 1951, he entered the urology department of the 2nd Moscow Medical Institute named after N.I. Pirogov as a graduate student. Academician A.N. Bakulev noticed his hard work, talent, and dedication to his field and involved him in heart, vascular, and lung surgeries.

In 1954, under the guidance of A.Ya. Pytel, Javad-Zadeh defended his candidate's dissertation on the topic of "Kidney Stones". After completing his graduate studies, he worked as an assistant and then acting associate professor in the urology department of Crimea Medical Institute from 1954 to 1957. He also served as the chief urologist of Crimea region.

In 1957, Javad-Zadeh was invited to join the urology department of the 2nd Moscow Medical Institute named after N.I. Pirogov (2nd Moscow State Medical Institute named after N.I. Pirogov). Under the supervision of A.Ya. Pytel, he participated in the development of important urology issues such as pyelonephritis, radiological diagnosis of diseases of the genitourinary system, clinical manifestations and treatment of kidney and urinary tract anomalies, polycystic kidney disease, and chronic kidney failure. In 1962, he defended his doctoral dissertation on the topic of "Polycystic Kidney Disease". In 1958, he and his colleagues successfully performed hemodialysis for patients with acute renal failure for the first time in the clinic of urology at the 2nd Moscow State Medical Institute named after N.I. Pirogov. The results of their research, in collaboration with A.Ya. Pytel and N.A. Lopatkina, were summarized in the monograph "Artificial Kidney and Its Clinical Application".

In 1963, Javad-Zadeh was appointed as the head of the newly established urology and operative nephrology department at the Azerbaijan State Institute for Advanced Medical Training named after A. Aliyev. In 1966, he transformed one of the multi-profile hospitals in Baku into the Republican Urological Hospital, the first large specialized medical institution of its kind in the Soviet Union. He has been the head of this clinic since its establishment.

Since 1965, Javad-Zadeh has also served as the chief urologist of the Ministry of Health of Azerbaijan. His scientific and practical interests cover almost all areas of urology, where he has made significant contributions and established his own school and original direction.

Contributions and Achievements

Javad-Zadeh has made significant contributions to the field of pediatric urology. In 1973, he opened a pediatric urology department with 60 beds at the Republican Clinical Urological Hospital. In 1980, he established the only urodynamic laboratory in the country. He developed a comprehensive treatment for neurogenic bladder dysfunction in children, with an effectiveness rate of nearly 90%.

Javad-Zadeh's efforts in studying vesicoureteral reflux are notable. His unique plastic surgeries have brought thousands of children back to life and made them full members of society. He also addressed the issue of vascular studies and nephrogenic hypertension in urology in 1964. In 1965, he performed the first aortography in Azerbaijan on a patient with unexplained hematuria.

The results of his research enabled him to propose a classification of nephrogenic hypertension in his programmatic report at the 1st All-Union Congress of Urologists in Baku in 1972, which is still relevant today. Since 1978, he has been the pioneer of endovascular surgery in Azerbaijan. In 1979, he and his colleagues developed and applied the method of endovascular electrocoagulation of the spermatic vein for the first time in the world in the treatment of varicocele.

Under Javad-Zadeh's leadership, extensive radionuclide testing in urology was initiated in the Republic of Azerbaijan. In 1969, a radioisotope laboratory was established, which later included a radioimmunological laboratory. This facilitated early detection of diseases of the genitourinary, endocrine, cardiovascular, respiratory, skeletal, and other systems.

To study the epidemiology, role of exo- and endogenous factors in the etiology and pathogenesis, and develop comprehensive conservative and surgical treatment measures, Javad-Zadeh established a laboratory for the study of urolithiasis in 1968. By thoroughly studying the prevalence of this disease in the republic, he created a geographical map of its distribution. The Republican Clinical Urological Hospital, under Javad-Zadeh's leadership, has been operating a specialized medical-genetic consultation since 1980, which was the first of its kind in the Soviet Union.

Javad-Zadeh was among the first in the Soviet Union to develop and implement autologous blood transfusion techniques for urogenital surgeries, ensuring patient safety and achieving significant economic benefits. In 1986, he and a group of scientists from various clinics in the Soviet Union were awarded the Prize of the Council of Ministers of the USSR for their work on "Chronic Hemodialysis and Kidney Transplantation in Azerbaijan".

In 1972, he established the specialized department of anesthesiology, resuscitation, and intensive care at the Republican Clinical Urological Hospital, the first of its kind in the Soviet Union. His initiative also led to the establishment of the Department of Anesthesiology-Resuscitation at the Azerbaijan State Institute for Advanced Medical Training named after A. Aliyev.

One of Javad-Zadeh's major research areas is renal failure, its pathogenesis, progression, complications, and the development of conservative and active treatments. In 1969, he created an artificial kidney laboratory, and in 1971, he performed the first kidney transplantation in the Transcaucasian region for end-stage renal failure.

In 1974, Javad-Zadeh and his research team were awarded the State Prize of Azerbaijan for their work on "Chronic Hemodialysis and Kidney Transplantation in Azerbaijan". In 1991, he introduced extracorporeal lithotripsy for the first time in Azerbaijan. Taking into account the specific patient population undergoing treatment with extracorporeal lithotripsy and transurethral resection, he established the Endosurgery and Lithotripsy Department at the Republican Clinical Urological Hospital, which started operating in early 1997.
