Biography of Solomon Goligorsky

Early Life and Education


Solomon Goligorsky was a Soviet urologist and nephrologist. He was born in an unknown date and place. He graduated from the medical faculty of Yassy University in 1934.

Medical Career


From 1941 to 1944, Goligorsky worked as a military surgeon in evacuation hospitals. In 1944, he returned to Kishinev and began specializing in urology. He served as the head of the Department of Urology and Nephrology at Kishinev Medical Institute until 1966.

Achievements and Contributions


In 1960, Goligorsky defended his doctoral dissertation on the topic of "Small Bladder. Intestinal Plasticity Issues." He published an expanded version of his dissertation as a monograph in 1959. Goligorsky was a prominent figure in the field of urology and nephrology, with over 270 scientific papers and 11 monographs to his name. His works focused on functional diagnostics of inflammatory kidney and urinary tract diseases, development of plastic surgical methods in urology, acute and chronic kidney failure, and extracorporeal hemodialysis. Some of his books, such as "Essays on Urological Semiotics and Diagnosis," "Pyelonephritis," and "Acute Renal Failure," were repeatedly reprinted. His three-volume series "Selected Chapters of Nephrology and Urology," co-authored with A.Ya. Pytel, is considered one of the most authoritative textbooks on urology and nephrology in Russian.

Later Career


In 1966, due to the new policy of so-called national cadres, Goligorsky was forced to leave his position as department head. However, in the same year, he became the head of the Department of Urology at Kiev Medical Institute named after A.A. Bogomolets. He held this position until 1979 and also served as the institute's vice-rector for scientific work. Goligorsky was a member of the presidium of the All-Union and Ukrainian Urological Societies and the deputy chairman of the Kiev Urological Society.

Legacy


Solomon Goligorsky's son, Mikhail Solomonovich Goligorsky, followed in his father's footsteps and became a renowned nephrologist and physiologist. He became a professor at the State University of New York at Stony Brook and the director of the Institute for Renal Research at the New York Medical College in Westchester. He has authored numerous works in the field of therapy for urinary tract diseases, kidney physiology, biochemistry, molecular biology, and urinary proteomics.

Family Connection


Solomon Goligorsky's cousin's nephew, Yuri Goligorsky, is a British radio journalist and the editor-in-chief of the broadcasting network for the BBC World Service in Central Asia and the Caucasus.
