Biography of Mira Koltsova

Early Life and Career

Mira Mikhailovna Koltsova, a Soviet ballet dancer, was born on December 21, 1938, in Moscow. She completed her education at the School of the State Academic Bolshoi Theatre of the USSR from 1948 to 1957 and the Lunacharsky State Institute of Theatre Arts from 1968 to 1973. Koltsova embarked on her creative journey over 40 years ago when she joined the State Academic Choreographic Ensemble "Berezka". She served as the leading soloist in the ensemble for 20 years until 1977.

Artistic Director and Main Ballet Master

Koltsova has been working in the State Academic Choreographic Ensemble "Berezka" for 40 years. She started as a ballet soloist in 1957 and became the artistic director and main ballet master of the ensemble in 1979. In 1978, she became the first assistant to Nadezhda Nadegdina, the founder of the ensemble, who was a Hero of Socialist Labor, People's Artist of the USSR, and Laureate of the State Prize of the USSR. A program in Nadegdina's memory was created in 1982. From 1987 onwards, "Berezka" has been performing numerous new productions under Koltsova's artistic direction. She has mastered the style and choreographic technique of the ensemble and skillfully utilizes them in the preparation and presentation of new productions and programs. Koltsova also works extensively in training the new generation of artists in the ensemble and enriches their professional skills by passing on the subtleties of the performance style and choreographic traditions of "Berezka". Over the years, the ensemble has performed for millions of viewers in Russia and more than 65 countries across five continents.

Other Contributions

Throughout her career, Koltsova has served as the main ballet master for Russian art festivals in Kiev, Warsaw, Sofia, Belgrade, and Berlin. In 1996, she was the main ballet master for the "Slavianski Bazaar" festival in Vitebsk. She also participated in the closing ceremony and performance "Moscow for All Times" at Luzhniki Stadium in Moscow in 1997, celebrating the 850th anniversary of the city's foundation. Apart from her extensive concert activities, Koltsova engages in charitable actions and promotes Russian dance folklore by conducting numerous meetings and workshops with representatives of Russian and international cultures.

Awards and Personal Life

In recognition of her significant contributions to the development of Russian choreographic art and her exceptional performing skills, Koltsova was awarded the honorary title of "Honored Artist of the RSFSR" in 1971, "People's Artist of the RSFSR" in 1978, and "People's Artist of the USSR" in 1989. She has been a member of the Union of Theatre Workers since 1979. Koltsova enjoys classical and opera music, Russian literature from the 19th and 20th centuries, as well as political and historical journalism. She is an avid mushroom hunter. Currently, she resides and works in Moscow.
