Romanian Percussionist
Early Life and EducationAlexandru Darvariu is a Romanian percussionist specializing in contemporary academic music. He studied at the academies in Cluj and Basel.
Competition Laurels
Darvariu's exceptional talent was recognized in 1978 with his victory at the National Performers' Competition in Bucharest. The following year, he triumphed at the Gaudeamus International Performers' Competition in the Netherlands.
Teaching
Since 1996, Darvariu has been a faculty member of the Darmstadt Summer School. He has also held a professorship at the Conservatorio della Svizzera Italiana in Lugano.
Premiere Performances
Darvariu has been the first to perform a number of groundbreaking works for percussion, including "Solaris" by Alexander Knaifel (1980), "Psalm 151: In Memoriam Frank Zappa" by Peter Eötvös (1993), and "Song of Light" by Elvira Garifzyanova (2008).
Notable Repertoire
Darvariu is renowned for his mastery of compositions by Karlheinz Stockhausen and John Cage. In 2003, he received a German music award for his recording of György Kurtág's works.
Critical Acclaim
Darvariu's concerts in Yekaterinburg (2005) and Moscow (2006) were met with critical acclaim, earning him rave reviews.
