Mireille Balestrazzi: A Pioneer in Law Enforcement
Early Life and EducationMireille Balestrazzi was born in France and pursued higher education, earning a degree in ancient languages and a Maîtrise in classical literature. With the acceptance of women into France's National Police School, she enrolled and graduated in 1976, becoming a police commissioner.
Law Enforcement Career
Balestrazzi's illustrious career in law enforcement began in 1978 in Bordeaux, where she led the Central Directorate of the Judicial Police's anti-gang unit (DCPJ). Her responsibilities later expanded to include the Central Office for the Repression of Thefts of Works of Art (OCRVOOA). In 1987, Balestrazzi gained widespread recognition for successfully recovering four stolen Jean-Baptiste Corot paintings in Semur-en-Auxois.
In 1991, she was promoted to Divisional Commissioner, and in 1993, she became the first woman to head the Ajaccio Police Department. From 1996 to 1998, Balestrazzi served as Deputy Minister of the Interior for Economic and Financial Affairs, holding the highest rank ever achieved by a woman in the French police.
Career Highlight: President of Interpol
In 2010, Balestrazzi was appointed General Inspector of the National Police and Vice-President for Europe on Interpol's Executive Committee. Her historic presidency of the Executive Committee from November 8, 2012, to November 10, 2016, marked her as the first woman to hold this esteemed position.
