Early Life and Education
Born on August 15, 1919, in Kuusankoski, Central Finland, Vire-Tuominen graduated from high school in 1937. She pursued a Bachelor of Philosophy degree at the University of Helsinki, which she earned in 1945.
Early Career
Concurrently with her university studies, Vire-Tuominen worked as an assistant at the State Accident Insurance Office (1939-1945). After graduating, she held administrative and secretarial positions at the Ministry of Public Order (1945-1946) and the Ministry of Social Affairs (1946-1949).
Political Activism
In 1944, Vire-Tuominen joined the Democratic Union of the Finnish People (SKDL) and became a member of the Communist Party of Finland (SKP) in 1946. She became actively involved in the Finnish Peace Committee, serving as its General Secretary from 1949 to 1975.
International Recognition and Honors
Vire-Tuominen was elected to the World Peace Council from 1955 to 1969 and received the International Lenin Peace Prize in 1965 for her efforts to promote world peace.
Parliamentary and Municipal Service
In 1970, Vire-Tuominen was elected to the Finnish Parliament as a representative for Helsinki. She served three consecutive terms until 1979 as a member of the SKDL parliamentary group. Additionally, she served on the Helsinki City Council from 1969 to 1976.
Later Career and Recognition
After retiring from Parliament, Vire-Tuominen became General Secretary of the Women's International Democratic Federation (1978-1987). She held the positions of Editor-in-Chief for the magazines "Tänään" (1951-1956) and "Rauhan puolesta" (1956-1975). Vire-Tuominen was also Vice-President of the Finland-Vietnam Friendship Society.
Personal Life and Legacy
Vire-Tuominen married Erkki Tuominen in 1941. They had one child, Helena Marjatta, born in 1947. Erkki Tuominen became a prominent politician and served as Finland's Minister of Justice from 1970 to 1971. Vire-Tuominen passed away in Helsinki on August 24, 2011. Her legacy as a peace advocate and political activist continues to inspire generations.
