Miroljub Labus: A Life Dedicated to Economic Revival
Early Life and EducationMiroljub Labus was born in 1947 and embarked on a legal career by graduating from the Law Faculty of the University of Belgrade. However, his pursuit of knowledge extended beyond the legal sphere, leading him to obtain a doctoral degree in economics from the same university. His proficiency in English language further enhanced his global perspectives.
Political Career
Labus served as a Member of the Parliament of the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia (FRY) from 1992 to 1996. During this period, he demonstrated his commitment to democratic ideals, becoming Deputy Chairman of the Democratic Party from 1994 to 1997. The party was then led by Vojislav Koštunica, who became a key figure in Labus's later political endeavors.
Economic Leadership
In the post-war reconstruction of Yugoslavia, Labus played a pivotal role as the chief economic advisor to President Koštunica. He was also appointed as Vice-Premier in the new cabinet. Labus took on the daunting task of stabilizing the fragile economy and preserving social harmony amidst the aftermath of NATO bombings.
Head of the "G-17" Expert Group
Labus spearheaded a group of independent experts known as "G-17." This group assumed control over Yugoslavia's economy, banking system, and customs service. Their policies were largely modeled after the economic reforms implemented in Eastern European countries by American economist Jeffrey Sachs.
Private Life
Labus is married and has two children. His personal life reflects his unwavering dedication to family and a balanced approach to work-life harmony.
