Michael Kogan: Early Life and Flight from Odessa
Born in Odessa in 1920, Michael Kogan's life took a dramatic turn when his family fled to Harbin, the capital of Manchuria, in 1920 due to persecution.
Tokyo, Wartime, and Education
In 1939, Kogan moved to Tokyo, where he resided during World War II. Despite the turmoil of the war, he pursued his education at the Waseda University Institute of Economics.
Tianjin and Return to Japan
In 1944, Kogan traveled to Tianjin, but returned to Japan in 1950 and settled in the Setagaya district of Tokyo. His experience in different parts of Asia would later influence his entrepreneurial endeavors.
Founding Taito Trading Company
In 1953, Kogan founded Taito Trading Company, which later became known as Taito Corporation. The company went on to become a leading developer of video games in Japan.
Family and Legacy
Michael Kogan's children, Abba and Rita, played significant roles in his life. Abba is a collector of vintage sports cars residing in Monaco, while Rita lives in Southern California and is married to Richard Edlund, the founder of Boss Films Studios. In 2005, Rita owned 8.5% of Taito Corporation shares.
Tragic Passing and Enduring Legacy
Michael Kogan passed away during a business trip to Los Angeles in 1984. Despite his untimely demise, his legacy as an entrepreneur and founder of Taito Corporation continues to inspire future generations in the gaming industry.
