Early Life and Career
Mitchell Craig "Mitch" Pileggi was born on April 5, 1952, in Portland, Oregon. His father, Vito Pileggi, was a military contractor, which led to the family constantly relocating during Mitch's childhood. He lived in Oregon, California, Texas, and Turkey.
Acting Beginnings
Inspired by his high school theater experiences in Turkey, Pileggi pursued a career in acting upon returning to Austin from Iran. He performed in local theaters and landed minor roles in B-movies and guest appearances on television shows such as "Dallas," "Married... with Children," "Walker, Texas Ranger," and "China Beach."
Breaking Through
In the 1980s, Pileggi gained recognition for his roles in films such as "Dead of Winter" and "Shocker." However, it was his portrayal of FBI Assistant Director Walter Skinner in "The X-Files" that catapulted him to stardom. Initially a recurring character, Skinner's popularity led to him becoming a series regular in 2001.
Notable Roles
Beyond "The X-Files," Pileggi starred in numerous popular television shows, including "Stargate: Atlantis," where he played Colonel Stephen Caldwell. He also appeared in episodes of "CSI: Crime Scene Investigation," "The Dresden Files," "Psych," "Supernatural," and "Law & Order: Special Victims Unit."
Voiceover Work
In addition to his on-screen roles, Pileggi has lent his voice to video games and animated series. He provided the voice of Dak'kon in "Planescape: Torment" and James Gordon in "Batman: The Animated Series."
Personal Life
Pileggi has been married twice. His first marriage to Debbie Andrews lasted from 1978 to 1983. In 1996, he married Arlene Warren, and they have one daughter, Sawyer, born in 1998. David Duchovny, his co-star on "The X-Files," introduced the couple and served as best man at their wedding in Hawaii. Arlene Warren has appeared in "The X-Files" as Gillian Anderson's body double and played an assistant to Walter Skinner named Arleen.
