Mnacakan Iskandaryan: A Greco-Roman Wrestling Legend

Early Life and Career

Mnacakan Iskandaryan was born on May 17, 1967, in Leninakan (now Gyumri), Armenia. He began his Greco-Roman wrestling journey in 1978 under the tutelage of Koryun Movsisyan. In 1987, he emerged as the World Youth Champion.

International Dominance

From 1988 to 1991, Iskandaryan represented the USSR national team. In 1989, he secured a silver medal at the European Championships. In 1990, he ascended to the world title in a heavier weight class. He became a double champion in 1991, winning both the European and World Championships.

Olympic Triumph

At the 1992 Barcelona Olympics, Iskandaryan represented Armenia in the Unified Team and claimed victory. In 1994, he achieved his third World Championship triumph. He further participated in the 1996 Atlanta Olympics before retiring from competition.

Coaching Career

After retiring, Iskandaryan transitioned to coaching. Since 1996, he has served as the head coach of the Russian Youth National Team. In 2012, he was inducted into the International Federation of United Wrestling Styles (FILA) Hall of Fame.

Iskandaryan's remarkable career also includes podium finishes at the following Soviet Union Championships:
