Early Life and Independence Movement

Abdul Hamid was born on January 1, 1944, in Dhaka, the capital of British India. As the nation gained independence in the mid-20th century, East Bengal became a part of Pakistan. While still a student, Hamid actively participated in the struggle for Bangladesh's independence from Pakistan. His involvement led to his arrest and imprisonment.

Political Career

Following Bangladesh's independence in 1971, Abdul Hamid was elected to the Bangladesh Parliament seven times. By the end of the 20th century, he emerged as a prominent leader of the Awami League party. He initially served as the Speaker of the Parliament from July to October 2001. In 2009, he was re-elected as Speaker, a position he held until 2013.

Presidency

In 2013, when President Zillur Rahman became ill and was sent to Singapore for treatment, Abdul Hamid served as his deputy. Upon Rahman's passing on March 20, 2013, Hamid became the President of Bangladesh in accordance with the Constitution. He was formally elected President on April 22, 2013, and has served in this capacity ever since.
