President of Bangladesh
Md. Shahabuddin Chuppu is the current President of Bangladesh, serving since April 24, 2023. A retired judge and distinguished legal professional, Chuppu has dedicated his life to serving his country.
Early Life and Education
Chuppu was born on December 10, 1949, in Pabna, East Bengal, Dominion of Pakistan (present-day Bangladesh). He earned a Bachelor of Science from Edward College and a Master of Arts in Psychology from Rajshahi University. He subsequently obtained a Bachelor of Laws from Mohammad Aminuddin Law College.
Political and Social Activism
During the 1970s, Chuppu emerged as a prominent leader within the Awami League's student and youth organizations in Pabna. A staunch advocate for independence, he played a pivotal role as the coordinator of the student movement during the 1971 Bangladesh Liberation War.
Legal Career
Following Bangladesh's independence, Chuppu embarked on a successful legal career. He practiced law at various levels, including the Supreme Court of Bangladesh, from 1980 to 2006. Prior to his legal practice, he worked as an editor for the Daily Banglar Bani newspaper.
Anti-Corruption Campaigner
Chuppu's commitment to justice and accountability led him to serve as Commissioner of the Anti-Corruption Commission from 2011 to 2016. In this role, he spearheaded efforts to combat corruption and uphold ethical practices.
Political Leadership
In 2020, Chuppu joined the advisory council of the Awami League. In 2022, he became the chairman of the party's publicity and publication subcommittee.
Presidency
On February 13, 2023, Chuppu was unanimously elected as the 22nd President of Bangladesh. He assumed office on April 24, 2023.
Personal Life
Md. Shahabuddin Chuppu is married and has a son.
