Biography of Zillur Rahman: President of Bangladesh

Zillur Rahman was born in Bayrab Upazila, Kishoreganj, into a family of lawyers. He obtained a basic legal education at Dhaka University and also earned a master's degree in history. Rahman participated in the Bengali Language Movement in 1952 and played a significant role in establishing Bengali as one of the state languages. Later, as a candidate of the Awami League, he was elected as a member of parliament in the national elections of 1970 in Pakistan.

During the Bangladesh Liberation War, Rahman actively participated in the activities of the exiled unrecognized government. After the end of the war and the declaration of independence, he became the general secretary of the Awami League in 1972 and was elected as a member of parliament in the general elections of 1973.

After the assassination of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, Zillur Rahman, along with three other high-ranking officials of the Awami League, was arrested by the military junta and spent four years in prison. Rahman served as a minister for local government, agriculture, and cooperative development in the Awami League government between 1996 and 2001 under the leadership of Sheikh Hasina Wazed.

After Hasina's arrest in 2007, he performed her duties in the Awami League, coordinating the party's activities. Shortly after her return to power in 2009 (when the party won 230 out of 300 seats in the elections), Rahman was nominated as the candidate for the presidency by the Awami League and then, due to the absence of other candidates, was elected as the President of Bangladesh.

Personal Life

Zillur Rahman was married to Ivy Rahman, an activist of the Awami League and the party's secretary for women's affairs. Unfortunately, Ivy Rahman was killed in 2004 in Dhaka in a grenade attack carried out by a terrorist from the "Harkat ul Jihad al Islami" movement. Now, Zillur Rahman single-handedly raises his son and two daughters.
