Early Life and Education

Nikolay Ajemov was born and raised in the Russian Empire, where he attended the Nakhichevan Theological Seminary, Rostov-on-Don Gymnasium, and Lazarev Institute of Oriental Languages. He completed his medical studies at the Moscow University in 1903 and passed the external examinations for a law degree at the same university in 1904, being granted admission to the Department of Criminal Law.

Political Activism

In 1906, Ajemov joined the Constitutional Democratic Party (Kadets) and became a member of its Central Committee. He served in the Russian Duma during its second and third convocations. As a publicist, Ajemov contributed to the "Vestnik Prava" and "Moskovskie Vedomosti" newspapers.

During the February Revolution of 1917, Ajemov served as Commissar of the Ministry of Justice in the Provisional Government. He supported the Menshevik and Trudovik proposal for the Duma to assume responsibility for organizing the new government. Ajemov was appointed to the Legal Advisory Council and the Special Council for the development of an electoral law for the Constituent Assembly.

Kadet Leadership and Advocacy

In May 1917, Ajemov was re-elected to the Kadet Central Committee with the highest number of votes. He campaigned on the Don alongside L.I. Shingarev and F.I. Rodichev, advocating for the alignment of Kadet goals with the interests of the Cossack population. Ajemov also spoke at the 2nd All-Cossack Congress held in Petrograd.

After the failed Kornilov Affair, Ajemov was expected to defend Kornilov as his lawyer. He participated in negotiations to form a coalition cabinet following the Democratic Conference. As one of the authors of the project for the Pre-Parliament, Ajemov's work formed the basis for the Provisional Council of the Russian Republic.

Conflict with the Bolsheviks and Emigration

Ajemov attempted to form a bloc with Mensheviks and Socialist-Revolutionaries to support the Provisional Government against the Bolsheviks. He also proposed accelerating peace negotiations at the initiative of the Kadet Central Committee.

Following the October Revolution, Ajemov emigrated to France, where he actively opposed the Soviet government. He became a renowned lawyer in Paris.
