Early Life and Service:
Alexei Danilovich Basmanov, a descendent of the Plesheev family, was a prominent Russian military and state figure during the reign of Ivan IV (the Terrible). Born to Daniil Plesheev-Basman, he actively participated in the political turmoil during Ivan's childhood.
Rise under Ivan IV:
In 1552, Basmanov's military exploits at the siege of Kazan earned him the rank of okolnichi (senior courtier). As a skilled courtier and valiant warrior, he became a trusted боярин (nobleman) and воевода (military commander) to Ivan the Terrible.
Military Campaigns and Honors:
Throughout his career, Basmanov commanded armies in numerous military campaigns. In the Kazan campaign of 1552, he played a crucial role in capturing the city, leading to his promotion to okolnichi. In 1555, he commanded the vanguard in the battle against the Crimean Khanate at Sudbishchi, where he valiantly led a force of 7,000 against 60,000 enemies.
Leadership in the Livonian War:
During the Livonian War (1558-1583), Basmanov continued his military prowess. In 1558, he commanded the vanguard at the capture of Rugodiv. In subsequent campaigns, he led the vanguard against the Livonian Order and distinguished himself in the capture of Polotsk.
Role in the Oprichnina:
Basmanov played a significant role in the establishment of the Oprichnina, Ivan's infamous secret police force. As a trusted confidant, he helped organize and execute its bloody actions.
Downfall and Demise:
Despite his loyalty and service, Basmanov fell into disfavor after the suppression of the Novgorod conspiracy in 1570. Accused of treason, he was murdered by his own son, Fedor, upon the orders of Ivan the Terrible.
