Formation and Debut (2016)
In June 2016, Mnet's reality survival show "Finding Momoland" aired, a project created by Duble Kick Entertainment to form a seven-member girl group from ten trainees. After the show, the selected members were set to debut, but the final mission failed to gather 3000 viewers, causing their official debut to be postponed for a time while they prepared with debut showcases, promotional events, fan meetings, and busking performances. On October 26th, the group was appointed as ambassadors of the Korea International Development Agency (KOICA) and held their debut showcase on November 9th. They released their debut mini-album, "Welcome to Momoland," on November 10th, and performed on M Countdown the same day. Their debut was made possible through crowdfunding to cover the costs of producing physical albums.
Expansion and Success (2017-2019)
In March 2017, Daisy and Taeha were added to the group, bringing the total members to nine. They released a digital single, "Wonderful Love," and later an EDM version that was performed on various music programs. In August, they released their second mini-album, "Freeze!," with the title track of the same name.
2018 brought about significant success for Momoland with the release of their third mini-album, "Great!" and its lead single, "BBoom BBoom." The song achieved great popularity and won multiple awards on music shows. They also made their debut in Japan with the Japanese version of "BBoom BBoom" and released additional mini-albums, including "Fun to the World" and "Show Me."
Departures and Changes (2019-2020)
In March 2019, it was announced that Taeha and Daisy would temporarily halt activities due to health and personal reasons. In November, Yeonwoo and Taeha left the group. Momoland released their first single album, "Thumbs Up," in December 2019.
In 2020, Daisy left Momoland after making allegations about the manipulation of the survival show that formed the group. The group continued with a special album release, "Starry Night," and announced plans to enter the American market.
Recent Developments (2021-Present)
In 2021, Momoland released a digital single, "Wrap Me In Plastic," in collaboration with CHROMANCE. Despite the departure of several members and legal disputes, Momoland continues to be active in the K-pop industry.
