Monica Spear, a Venezuelan actress, soap opera star, and beauty queen, gained fame after winning the Miss Venezuela 2004 pageant. As the winner, she represented her country at the Miss Universe 2005 competition. Before her success in the beauty pageants, Monica received a Bachelor's degree in Theater Arts from the University of Central Florida. Despite controversy surrounding her knowledge of Venezuelan playwright Gabriel Garcia Marquez, Monica's education and talent were widely recognized.

In 2005, Monica became the first Venezuelan contestant in 22 years to reach the "Top 15" at the Miss Universe competition. Her exceptional performance in the swimsuit and evening gown segments earned her a spot in the "Top 5." Tragically, they were attacked by five men while waiting for assistance. Monica and Thomas lost their lives during the incident, while their daughter sustained a leg injury from a bullet. The exact sequence of events remains unclear, but it is believed that the couple resisted the armed robbers, resulting in their untimely deaths. The Irish Department of Foreign Affairs initially investigated the incident but later revealed that Berry was traveling under a British passport.
