Moritz Kaposi: Hungarian Dermatologist and Venerologist
Moritz Kaposi was born Moritz Kohn into a Jewish family in 1837. In 1871, he converted to Catholicism and adopted the surname Kaposi after his hometown.
Education and University Career
Kaposi graduated from the University of Vienna in 1861 and became a privat-docent in dermatology and venereology in 1866. In 1875, he was appointed professor, and in 1879, he succeeded Professor Ferdinand von Hebra as head of the university's dermatology clinic. From 1881 until his death, Kaposi served as chair of the Department of Dermatology at the University of Vienna.
Research and Publications
Kaposi's early research was conducted under the supervision of Hebra, who entrusted him with writing the second volume of his extensive treatise on skin diseases (1870-1876). In addition to numerous studies on specific skin diseases (including lupus erythematosus), Kaposi published several major works:

LegacyMoritz Kaposi died in Vienna on March 6, 1902. His name is associated with Kaposi's sarcoma, a multiple hemorrhagic sarcomatosis. This rare cancer affects the blood vessels and lymphatic tissues, primarily in immunocompromised individuals.
