Early Life
Born in Turkey to descendants of Abkhaz refugees, Muhammed's origins trace back to the 19th century forced migration from Abkhazia to Turkey. Rumored to be the son of Adil Tuk-Ipa and a relative of fellow "Grandsons of Shamil" member Khamzat Gitsba, Muhammed's early life remains shrouded in mystery.
Conflict and Captivity
As a participant in the 1992-1993 Georgian-Abkhazian conflict and the Chechen Wars, Muhammed's involvement in violent clashes sharpened his resolve. He was a key figure in the 1996 capture of the "Avrasia" ferry, only to be apprehended and briefly held captive before escaping prison. His rearrest in Turkey in 1999 revealed his role in the ferry incident, which he claimed was executed under the direct orders of Shamil Basayev.
Amnesty and Hostage Crisis
In 2000, Muhammed received amnesty. However, his involvement in a hostage crisis at a Istanbul hotel in 2001, where he demanded an end to Russian actions in Chechnya, once again brought him into the spotlight. Though none of the hostages were harmed, the court sentenced 13 Chechen-Turkish citizens to prison terms ranging from three to eleven years. Muhammed Emins Tokcan, the group's leader, was the only one to serve time. The others were released due to time served while awaiting trial.
