Mu'nira Abdulla: A Miraculous Awakening after 27 Years in a Coma
Heroic Mother's SacrificeIn 1991, Mu'nira Abdulla, a 32-year-old mother from the United Arab Emirates, made an extraordinary sacrifice to save her son Omar. While driving home from kindergarten with her four-year-old in the backseat, Mu'nira reacted swiftly to a collision with a bus, shielding her son from the impact with her own body.
Traumatic Injury and Persistent Trauma
The accident left Mu'nira with a severe head injury. For the next 27 years, she remained in a vegetative state, unresponsive to all but pain. Despite several attempts to recover, her condition remained unchanged.
The Miracle of Awakening
In 2017, the Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi, Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed, heard Mu'nira's story and ordered her to receive the best possible medical care. She was transferred to Germany, where a team of specialists performed muscle reconstruction surgery and administered medications to regulate her sleep patterns.
Within a year, Mu'nira started to emerge from her coma. Her first breakthrough came when she began making incoherent sounds. Three days later, she uttered her son's name, Omar.
A Joyous Reunion
"That was her! She said my name, and it was like heaven," Omar recalled. "I had dreamed about this moment for so long, and the first word she said was my name."
Recovery and Challenges
Mu'nira has since regained consciousness and can communicate reasonably well in familiar situations. However, she still requires regular physiotherapy to address muscle weakness.
The Passage of Time
During the 27 years that Mu'nira was unconscious, the world saw countless transformations: the collapse of the Soviet Union, the rise of the internet, the death of Princess Diana, the launch of the iPod, the Iraq War, and the election of Donald Trump. Mu'nira has missed all these milestones, but she has now an opportunity to reconnect with her family and the world around her.
