Early Life and Education

Murray Arbeid was born in England in 1935. At the age of fifteen, he enrolled in the London-based Paris Academy, where he also worked with a high-end clothing manufacturer. In 1952, Arbeid joined forces with renowned fashion designer Michael Sherard, gaining valuable experience and insights into the industry.

Establishing His Own Enterprise

In December 1954, Arbeid launched his own business, which operated until 1992. While he offered a range of fashion products, his focus remained on glamorous evening gowns and cocktail dresses. His company enabled him to combine designing custom-made garments with wholesale production.

Advising Norman Hartnell and Moving to Bond Street

In the late 1960s, Arbeid served as a fashion consultant to Norman Hartnell. In the mid-1970s, he established a showroom on London's Bond Street, catering to elite clientele from Britain and abroad.

Designing for Princess Diana

Arbeid's career took a significant turn when he began designing for Princess Diana. The princess wisely chose predominantly British designers, including Arbeid. He created exquisite gowns for Diana, including a memorable navy tulle dress adorned with stars and a black and red Spanish-style dress.

Auction and Legacy

Both of these dresses were sold at the 1997 Charity Sale of Princess Diana in New York. Arbeid's creations continue to be highly sought after, and his legacy as a talented British designer lives on.
