Early Life and Background
Mutaz Essa Barshim, a Qatari high jumper, was born into a family with a rich sporting legacy. His father, Essa Barshim, was a former mid- and long-distance runner who now coaches at a local sports club. With four brothers, including fellow high jumper Muamer Aissa Barsham, and a sister, Barshim grew up in an environment that fostered his athletic pursuits.
Junior Career and International Debut
Before specializing in high jump, Barshim also competed in long jump until the age of 15. He made his international debut in 2009 and clinched the World Junior Championship title in 2010. In 2011, he finished 7th at the World Championships, followed by a 9th place at the 2012 World Indoor Championships.
Olympic Bronze and Asian Success
Barshim's breakthrough came at the 2012 London Olympics, where he won the bronze medal with a jump of 2.29m. In 2013, he emerged victorious at the Europa SC High Jump competition. The following year, he became the Asian Indoor Champion with a jump of 2.36m.
First World Title and New Asian Record
At the 2014 Golden Gala, Barshim made history by setting a new Asian record of 2.41m. Days later, he narrowly missed out on another record at the Adidas Grand Prix, finishing second with a jump of 2.42m. His triumph at the last leg of the Diamond League – the Memorial Van Damme – brought him the overall title for the 2014 season.
Indoor Asian Records and Olympic Silver
In 2015, Barshim shattered the Asian indoor record twice, first with a jump of 2.40m and then with a new mark of 2.41m. At the 2016 Rio Olympics, he claimed the silver medal, jumping 2.36m and finishing behind Canadian Derek Drouin.
Tokyo Olympics Gold and Asian Titles
In August 2021, Barshim reached the pinnacle of his career by winning the Olympic gold medal at the Tokyo Games. His jump of 2.37m earned him a historic tie with Italian Gianmarco Tamberi. The victory marked Qatar's second Olympic gold in all sports, after weightlifter Fares Ibrahim's triumph a day earlier.
World Championship Success
Barshim's dominance continued at the World Championships, where he claimed titles in 2017, 2019, and 2022. He also won the Asian Games in 2010, 2014, and 2022, as well as multiple Asian Championships.
