Stefka Kostadinova is a Bulgarian track and field athlete who has achieved remarkable success in the high jump. She holds the distinction of being the current world record holder in the event.
Olympic Glory and World Dominance
Kostadinova rose to prominence at the 1996 Summer Olympics, where she claimed the gold medal in the high jump. Her victory was the culmination of her hard work and dedication, making her a national hero in Bulgaria. She also achieved success in the World Championships, winning two outdoor titles in 1987 and 1995.
Indoor Dominance and World Record
Kostadinova's dominance extended to indoor competitions as well. She became a five-time World Indoor Champion, a feat unmatched by any other athlete. Her first world record was set in 1986, with a jump of 2.08 meters. A year later, at the World Championships in Rome, she improved her own record by one centimeter.
Transition to Sports Administration
Following her retirement from competition, Kostadinova transitioned to sports administration. She served as Vice President of the Bulgarian Athletics Federation and the Bulgarian Olympic Committee before becoming its President on November 11, 2005. In this role, she has played a pivotal role in promoting sports and supporting athletes in Bulgaria.
