Maya Harrison Biography

Maya Harrison is an American hip-hop singer, actress, producer, dancer, choreographer, and model. She started her artistic journey in her childhood, learning ballet and tap dancing, as well as singing and playing the flute. Maya joined the Tappers With Attitude (TWA) troupe and traveled to New York to take dance lessons at the Harlem Dance Theatre under the renowned choreographer Savion Glover, known for his Broadway productions Bring In 'Da Noise and Bring In 'Da Funk.

Early Music Career

By the mid-1990s, Maya shifted her focus to another passion - music. Her father, a professional R&B musician, helped her create demo recordings. One of these demos caught the attention of Haqq Islam, the president of University Music, who was impressed with Maya's talent and secured her a contract with Interscope Records. For the next two years, Maya worked in the Interscope studio, crafting her debut album. Notable artists such as Darryl Pearson, Babyface, Diane Warren, Raphael Brown, Wyclef Jean, Missy "Misdemeanor" Elliott, and Sisqo from Dru Hill contributed to the album titled "Mya." It was released in April 1998.

At the age of eighteen, Maya entered the music scene with three hit singles: "It's All About Me" featuring Sisqo, "Movin' On" with No Limit Records star Silkk The Shocker, and "My First Night With You." However, her true fame came after recording the collaboration with Pras featuring Ol' Dirty Bastard, "Ghetto Supastar (That Is What You Are)," which was featured in the movie Bulworth. Additionally, Maya participated in the recording of Blackstreet's song "Take Me There" from the Rugrats soundtrack.

Continued Success and Acting Career

Two years later, Maya released her second album titled "Fear of Flying." The album featured collaborations with Lisa "Left Eye" Lopez, Jadakiss, Wyclef Jean, and Swizz Beatz. Notable singles from the album include "Case of the Ex," "The Best of Me," "Free," and a collaboration with dancehall king Beenie Man titled "Lie Detector." The single "Best of Me" was initially recorded with rapper Jadakiss and later remixed with rapper Jay-Z. In June 2001, Missy Elliott produced a remake of "Lady Marmalade," bringing together Maya, Lil' Kim, Pink, and Christina Aguilera. The single gained immense popularity and earned the group a Grammy Award in 2002 and an MTV Video Music Award for Best Video.

During breaks between album recordings, Maya had the opportunity to showcase her talents in musical theater, appearing in Chicago. The filming experience was extraordinary for Maya, as she had to act, sing, and dance, giving her all in the role. Maya also starred in the film Havana Nights (a.k.a Dirty Dancing II) as a vocalist in a 1950s Latin American group.

Continued Music Career

In 2003, Maya released her third album titled "Moodring," with contributions from Missy Elliott, Timbaland, Damon Elliott, Knobody, Rockwilder, Omen, Tricky, Jam & Lewis, and Ron Fair. The most memorable hit single from the album, "My Love Is Like...Wo," was produced by Missy Elliott. Maya conceptualized the video for the song herself. The album reflected Maya's mystical side.
