Nadine Dorries: A Life in Politics
Nadine Dorries is a British Conservative politician who served as the Secretary of State for Digital, Culture, Media, and Sport from 2021 to 2022. She was the Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Health and Social Care from 2019 to 2021 and the Secretary of State for Digital, Culture, Media, and Sport from 2021 to 2022. She was a Member of Parliament (MP) for Mid Bedfordshire from 2005 to 2023. On 10 March 2020, she became the first British MP to test positive for coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). Dorries was considered to be a staunch supporter of former Prime Minister Boris Johnson.
Controversies and Resignation
In 2012, she lost the Conservative whip after taking part in the reality television show "I'm a Celebrity...Get Me Out of Here!" without telling the Chief Whip. She was returned to the whip in 2013 and was readmitted to the parliamentary party. On 9 June 2023, Dorries announced that she was standing down as an MP. However, she later said she would not proceed with her resignation until she received information about why she had been denied a peerage as part of Boris Johnson's resignation honours. A peerage allows a person to become a member of the House of Lords. Following the snub, she resigned on 29 August. Dorries had not spoken in the House of Commons since June 2022 and had not taken up a select committee role. Her conduct was criticized by politicians, including Prime Minister and Conservative Party leader Rishi Sunak, for failing to properly represent her constituents.
