Najib Mikati: Lebanon's 48th Prime Minister
Political DynastyNajib Mikati, the 48th Prime Minister of Lebanon, was born into a prominent political family in Tripoli, North Lebanon. His father, Maqsood Mikati, was a wealthy contractor and a leading member of the city's Sunni Muslim community. Mikati inherited his father's political aspirations, embarking on a career that would span decades.
Education and Early Career
Mikati received his education at the prestigious American University of Beirut and the Harvard Business School. Upon graduating, he established a successful career in the telecommunications industry, becoming a prominent businessman. His expertise in the private sector would later serve him well in government.
Entry into Politics
Mikati made his political debut in 1992, joining former Prime Minister Rafik Hariri's government as the Minister of Public Works and Transport. He held this position for several years, gaining valuable experience in infrastructure development and public administration.
Re-Emergence as Prime Minister
After Lebanon's devastating civil war, a new generation of politicians emerged, including Mikati. He re-joined the government in 2004, serving as a minister in the cabinet of Prime Minister Omar Karami. However, he declined to join the Syrian-supported cabinet in 2004, despite his close ties to Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.
Harassment of Hariri
Mikati maintained a close personal and business relationship with Prime Minister Rafik Hariri. After Hariri's assassination in 2005, Mikati shifted his allegiance to the opposition camp, distancing himself from the Syrian-backed government.
Prime Minister's Mandate
Mikati became Prime Minister in September 2021, with the support of the Lebanese Forces and the Future Movement. He assumed office at a time of severe economic and political crisis in Lebanon. As Prime Minister, Mikati has focused on rebuilding the country's shattered economy, negotiating with international creditors, and addressing the humanitarian crisis facing the Lebanese people. His tenure as Prime Minister continues to unfold, with the hope of bringing stability and prosperity to Lebanon.
